Five Ways Senior Centers Benefit Our Community

Senior centers have big responsibilities and provide various services for seniors. The New Horizon Counseling Center is a senior center on Concord’s West Side that provides counseling, recreational activities, and support to over 2000 seniors every year.

The New Horizon has been helping the residents of New York for years. They have a wide range of resources for seniors, such as socialization and wellness programs, wellness education, supportive day programs, affordable self-directed care options, and monthly services packages.

Here are ways that senior centers benefit our community;

  1. MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES:

There is a continuous need for seniors to have mental health support in their later years, and the demand is growing in need for these services. Senior centers like New Horizon act as a bridge between the community and resources that promote mental health care for seniors.

Services to help people with depression, anxiety, and stress can be life-altering. It is common for a person to feel like they have lost their voice when they have lost communication. In these cases, people may not express how they feel or deteriorate their health.

  1. SAFETY:

The safety of our community is a concern that we all must have. Many seniors are at risk of falling, becoming disabled, or living in poverty, leading to the development of health issues and poorer quality of life. Senior centers can offer activities and programs that educate people about health issues and provide instruction on improving safety in the home.

  1. RESOURCES

Senior centers provide community members with many services and resources, such as financial support, networking opportunities, and socialization. A person can get back in touch with friends and family that they may have lost touch with or help them to connect with groups of people that they may want to be part of.

  1. COMMUNITY SUPPORT

A person can find comfort in knowing that they have a place to go and have the opportunity to engage in group activities. They can also access resources and services they may not get otherwise. Senior centers provide a place for seniors to form support groups. This can be very minimal, such as a support group over coffee or tea or a more complex group that provides services to the community, such as mental health counseling for seniors and their families.

  1. RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Many seniors have the desire to maintain the life they have led. This may include wanting to continue important activities, such as playing sports, games, or even taking a class. Senior centers offer activities that can help people stay connected to their community and feel like they are not burdening others. Many senior centers also provide transportation to get to different locations easily.

Senior Centers offer community services that help seniors remain healthy and engaged in their communities. They offer many services for their members, including an activity room with arts and crafts, a library of books to borrow, a resource room with computers, and a dining area. These centers also provide services for those who do not have family members who can take care of them and offer programs for people to become more independent or find new opportunities through job training or recreational activities like yoga or bingo. Often, senior centers have a building dedicated solely to senior services. New Horizon Counseling Center is no different.
