Peninsula Counseling Center in Valley Stream was acquired by New Horizon Counseling Center, a mental health service provider with established locations in Brooklyn and Queens. The change is management became official on Monday.

“Our goal is to create a sustainable solution for mental health services for Nassau County,” said Herrick Lipton, administrative and financial director for NHCC. “In today’s environment, many health care providers are struggling to survive.”

The new management said the change was due to the closure of Peninsula Counseling Center’s mental health services. The institution has served the community for more than 100 years, beginning as the Relief Society of Lawrence in 1913. The center’s location is the same and is now listed as NHCC’s Valley Stream clinic.

The organization bills itself as one of the largest non-profit providers of community-based mental health services in New York City. It has been in operation for 30 years and states that its mission is “empowering individuals and strengthening communities.” It accepts most insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, other providers, private payers and sliding scale as needed.

Flora Blenstock is the clinical and programs director for NHCC. “It’s rewarding to extend our 30 years of experience in providing quality comprehensive behavioral health services and clinical excellence in NYC to the Nassau community,” she said.
